Apathy ,Empathy and Sympathy: Beneath the Same Firmament

We all live under the same sky. The same sun rises every morning and spreads its light everywhere. The same moon appears every night and makes the darkness softer. Nature does its part with fairness, but human beings often fail to do their part with justice.

In the same city, even on the same street people can live very different lives. In one house, education is a basic right in another, it is only a dream. For one family a job is a choice, for another, it is a fight to survive. One young person plans for the future, while another struggles with the problems of today. The sky above them is the same but the ground beneath their feet is not.

We often judge people by their results without understanding their journey. We see success but ignore the support and comfort behind it. We see failure but forget the hard conditions that caused it.

Economic inequality in society makes this gap even clearer. One child studies in a modern school with all facilities while another does not even have basic needs. Both study the same syllabus and sit in the same exam but their situations are not equal. Expecting the same results from them is not justice it is unfair.

I have seen homes where dreams cost more than bread. That day I felt helpless.

Sometimes a child stands before a teacher and says softly,

“Sir, I do not have books…. and I cannot pay the fee.”

One morning, I was sitting in the Higher Secondary school park with the Principal. A student was called and the Principal asked him gently, “Why do you attend school on alternate days?” The boy stood silently for a moment and then replied “Sir, I am not able to pay my fare charges every day. One day I work as a labourer and the next day I come to school.”

At that moment it is not only the child who feels ashamed but society as well. “Even today, that boy’s words disturb me.”

The difference is not only about money; it affects the heart and mind too. Inequality is not just about fewer resources it also brings feelings of sadness and mental stress. Some children grow up in safe and secure homes, while others grow up in fear and uncertainty. For some night brings peace for others, it brings worry.

Today life is shown more than it is lived. On social media we see success but we do not see the struggle behind it. Everyone looks happy, but not every smile means true peace.

Do not keep your children limited to a room with a laptop. Let them meet people from weaker sections of society so they understand real life, not just what they see on a screen. When we see the struggles of others closely we learn gratitude, kindness, and responsibility.

We see where people stand today, but we do not see the path they walked. We look at the destination but ignore the tiredness of the journey. This is where our thinking must change.

If hearts are alive, society stays strong. Empathy is not weakness it is strength. When we accept that everyone is fighting their own battle, we stop judging and start helping. Competition turns into cooperation.

The real question is not why our story is different. The real question is how our story can support someone else. If we are educated, are we ready to teach others? If we have money, are we ready to help those in need? If we have a voice will we use it for justice?

The world is moving forward very fast. But we must ask ourselves: are we becoming better human beings? Is humanity growing with development?

Every person has the right to live with dignity. Instead of making fun of the poor, we should try to understand them. Instead of showing someone’s weakness, it is better to quietly help them.

We all live under the same sky. Our stories are different, but our humanity is the same. If we hold each other’s hands the world can become less harsh.

In the end, the real question is not who has more but who is ready to share more. The sky is wide for everyone but making life easier on the ground is our responsibility. If we fill our hearts with justice, kindness, and awareness the distance between rich and poor can slowly decrease. True progress is not measured by tall buildings but by strong character. When we feel the pain of others as our own then even under the same sky our different stories can lead to a shared and hopeful future.
