Lets Defeat Diabetes

Professor Shiv Sethi

A revolutionary book entitled “Diabetes- The Real Cause and The Right Cure” with a sub title “ 8 Steps to Reverse Type 2 Diabetes in 8 Weeks” is a bold and eye-opening treatise on Type 2 diabetes. In this book, Dr. John M. Poothullil, a retired Indian-origin physician from the USA, challenges the long accepted and followed theory of the cause of Type 2 diabetes—“insulin resistance.” Right from the start, he makes it clear that he’s going against the mainstream and wants readers to rethink everything they know about the disease. His main contention is that Type 2 diabetes isn’t something you get because of hormones or genes—it’s mostly the result of eating too many grains like rice, wheat, and corn.

One of the strongest points of the book is that he simply and clearly explains the loopholes in the traditional medical explanation of the cause of Type 2 diabetes. Dr. Poothullil explains the the basic inconsistencies in this theory,  which has been accepted for many years without any scientific explanation or proof arguing that if insulin resistance is real, why  only three types of cells out of 200 would suddenly stop responding to insulin. He asks if muscles are supposedly not getting glucose, why  diabetics do not suffer muscle failure. He also underlines the strange behaviour of gestational diabetes appearing  suddenly during pregnancy and going away  immediately after delivery to emphasize that the usual theories of diabetes appear to be fault-ridden.

After logically analyzing these lacunae, he offers his own explanation. According to him, today’s grain-heavy diet, a diet made with rice, wheat and the flours  of these grains,  overloads the body with carbohydrates filling the blood with excess amounts of glucose . When fat cells reach their limit, extra fatty acids float around in the bloodstream and push muscles to burn fat instead of glucose. As a result, glucose remains unused and gets built up in the bloodstream—leading to high blood sugar. He explains this idea in a scientific manner pointing out that diabetes affects people of all shapes, sizes, and ages in modern times.

He continues his argument, moving from theory to practice. He gives eight simple, practical steps that focus on taking a diet with more vegetables, fruits, leafy vegetables and tubers avoiding or at least cutting back on grains, eating millets, keeping in mind that even these also should be in a less quantity, supplemented with three types of nuts on a daily basis and reconnecting with real hunger and fullness signals. His message sounds optimistic in that with the right dietary habits , diabetics can bring down their blood sugar in just eight weeks without having to take medications, thereby freeing themselves of the evil effects and financial loss of taking pills and insulin injections.

Of course, some readers and diabetics might find his ideas too difficult for them to accept, given the fact that they’re used to following traditional medical treatment of Type 2 diabetes . And yes, some of his claims, they may feel,  need more practical proof to fully back them up. But whether you agree with him or not, the book is definitely trail blazing
and worth considering. It’s easy to read, logical, and gives a refreshing sense of control to anyone dealing with diabetes or worrying about it.

To sum up, it may be confidently claimed that “Diabetes: The Real Cause and The Right Cure”  is a worth reading and potentially a life-transforming book to go through . It opens up new vistas of reckoning inviting people to take responsibility of their health for a change for the better,  appealing to them to simply pay attention to what and how they eat.
