Midterm Conference 2024 on "Safe Surgical Practice" Kicks off at SDH Kupwara

Today, SDH Kupwara became a focal point of medical excellence as it hosted the Midterm Conference 2024, themed "Safe Surgical Practice." This conference, the first of its kind at SDH Kupwara, is the result of a collaborative effort between the Post-Graduate Department of Surgery at the hospital and the Jammu & Kashmir Chapter of the Association of Surgeons of India (JAKASI). Its debut underscores the institution’s commitment to advancing surgical standards and patient care.


The event has attracted a notable assembly of medical professionals from across Jammu and Kashmir, reflecting its significance in the field of surgery. The attendees include experienced professors, surgical and medical experts, consultants, and medical officers from Jammu & Kashmir Health Services (JKHS), as well as students from all Government Medical Colleges (GMCs) in the region. Their participation highlights the conference's role as a vital platform for sharing knowledge and improving surgical practices.


The opening ceremony of the conference was marked by the presence of key figures from the medical and administrative sectors. Madam Ayushi Sudan, IAS, Deputy Commissioner of Kupwara, attended as the Chief Guest, while Dr. Anjum Afshan, Assistant Director of JK Health Services Kashmir, served as the Guest of Honor. They were joined by Professor Dr. Iqbal Saleem Mir, Head of Surgery at GMC Srinagar and Chairman of JAKASI, Chief Medical Officer of Kupwara Dr. Mohd Ramzan, the Medical Superintendent of SDH Kupwara, and various other medical officers. Their presence underscored the conference’s importance and the collective commitment to enhancing surgical practices.


In his address, Dr. Gulzar Ahmad Bhat, the organizing secretary, highlighted the conference’s pivotal role in the evolution of surgical techniques and patient safety. He emphasized the event’s potential to bring together diverse expertise and foster dialogue on advancing surgical care.

“Today marks the beginning of an essential journey where we unite to deepen our collective expertise in surgical practices. We look forward to exploring a broad spectrum of topics and interactive sessions designed to expand our knowledge and skills,” Dr. Bhat stated.

The conference's agenda spans two days and includes a comprehensive array of presentations and discussions. The program covers a range of advanced topics such as stapled haemorrhoidopexy, enhanced techniques for inguinal hernia repair (eTEP), and innovative methods for managing thoracic trauma. These sessions aim to offer participants actionable insights and practical strategies to refine surgical practices and enhance patient outcomes.


An interactive component of the conference includes a medical quiz designed to challenge and broaden participants’ knowledge. Alongside this, postgraduate quizzes and poster presentations will showcase the contributions of emerging medical professionals, highlighting innovative solutions to contemporary surgical challenges. These activities are designed to stimulate intellectual engagement and inspire future medical leaders.


A crucial focus of the conference is the theme of "Safe Surgical Practice." Discussions have also addressed the pressing need for significant upgrades at SDH Kupwara. Future plans discussed include the acquisition of advanced surgical equipment, modernization of operating theatres, establishment of a superspecialty facility, creation of a minimal access unit, and enhancement of modular theatres and human resources. These proposed improvements are aimed at elevating the standard of care at SDH Kupwara.
